Vermillion topped by North Sioux Stars 61-53 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers lost a second-half lead and were topped by the North Sioux City Stars 61-53 in boys' basketball Jan. 30 at North Sioux City.

The Vermillion varsity had led by three at halftime.

"We battled with them and played pretty good at times," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "Down the stretch we did not rebound or hit our freethrows and they did. That was the difference."

Vermillion lost the game despite an edge from three-point range, making 10 of 21 from beyond the circle to 3 of 6 for North Sioux City.

The Tanagers fell behind 12-11 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 28-25 at halftime, and then trailed 40-33 after the third quarter.

Vermillion saw its record fall to 8-5, while North Sioux City upped its mark to 9-4.

Vermillion hit 9 of 18 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 17 of 43 field goal attempts, while North Sioux City was 23 of 43 from the field. The Stars connected on 12 of 17 free throw attempts.

Vermillion was outrebounded 37-18.
