Vermillion’s superior play leads to 61-48 win

Vermillion's superior play leads to 61-48 win by Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers beat the Canton C-Hawks 61-48 in girls' basketball Feb. 7 at Canton as the winners led after each quarter.

"This is the best game we have played in a long while," said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. "Maybe even best game we have played all year. We put together four strong quarters without any extended lapeses."

The Tanagers jumped in front 19-14 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 28-21 at halftime, and then held a lead of 43-36 after the third period.

Vermillion improved its season mark to 7-9, while Canton fell to 8-5.

Vermillion sank 6 of 15 three-point tries and connected on 13 of 17 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 21 of 47 field goal attempts, while Canton was 19 of 55 from the field. Canton hit 4 of 21 three-point tries and made 6 of 12 free throw tries.

Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.

"It's hard to pick out any individual players on a night like tonight,' coach Parish said. "Jackie Thomas had her best game of the year. Not only because of the points she scored but also the way she handled the ball and made good decisions. Her hard work and silent leadership set the tone for us tonight. Kayla Mollet had a career night. She was opportunistic with her scoring, played good defense and went 4-5 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter when we really needed them.

"Melissa Olson had a very good outing, too; their players tried to really be physical with her and she didn't allow it to take her out of her game. Annie Roche didn't put up huge stats but her presence and attitude helped to keep everyone focused throughout the game," he said. "It was a great team effort tonight and that's what we will continue to encourage for the remainder of the year and emphasize for our 'second season' that is quickly approaching."
