VHS gymnasts place third at Region 2A meet by Jim Prosser In the Region 2A meet held in Madison last Friday, Feb. 13, the Tanager gymnastics team suffered adversity when they "fell" in dispair and disappointment as they struggled to place third behind the Lady Bulldogs from Madison and the Wagner Red Raiders, scoring 122.425 points to qualify for the state meet scheduled for Feb. 20-21 in Brookings at the Swiftel Multiplex Center.
The top three team scores are invited to attend the state meet, and the best 14 individuals in each event also qualify. Qualifiers for All Around at the state are the top five in the region and anyone meeting the standard of 29 points.
Vermillion participants with their scores and place in each event are listed as follows.
Ariel Hofman, bars 8.00 (4th), beam 7.55 (8th), floor 7.70 (13th), vault 8.65 (2nd), AA 31.90(7th) standard qualified.
Sarah Christopherson, bars 7.95 (5th), beam 6.95 (13th), floor 8.675 (4th), vault 8.5 (5th), AA 32.075 (5th) standard qualified.
Brittany Gilkyson, bars 7.725 (7th), vault 8.35 (7th).
Raychel Lorenz, bars 6.675 (13th), floor 6.45 (16th).
Theresa Ring, bars 6.15 (16th), vault 7.3 (20th).
Calle Soreson, bars 6.025 (17th).
Sarah Gregg, beam 6.9 (14th).
Tristen Upward, beam 7.5 (11th), floor 7.35 (14th).
Amy Mart, beam 6.35 (17th).
Brittney Epping, beam 4.35 (23rd), floor 4.55 (21st).
Bethany Sand, floor 5.025 (18th), vault 7.5 (16th).
"We looked good at practice all week, that's why our performance at Regions was so frustrating," stated Coach Mark Upward. "We need to regroup as a team so we can perform well at State."
Madison goes into the state meet with the highest score from all region meets, while Vermillion goes in with the seventh highest score.
