Warriors hope to do well in post-season tournament by Bethany Parvin The round ball has been bouncing for three months now; finally post season is upon us.
Coach Wright's Wakonda boys' basketball team is hopeful going in to District 8B. In regular conference play the Warriors are 3-2 against district foes. Their overall season record is 12-6.
Looking back at the season, coach Wright thinks they have played defense the best this year.
"With the exception of a couple of games, we've done a pretty good job. We've rebounded and shot free throws pretty well all season, too," said coach Wright.
Wright takes a realistic perspective about the district games, as his toughest opponent is whoever they are playing at the time.
Wakonda's proudest moment is bouncing back to beat Hurley. Before that they had three tough losses in a row against Avon, Dell Rapids St. Mary and Viborg. The boys kept their heads up, kept working hard, and went to Hurley and won on their court.
The boys of the Warrior team are also ready for districts.
"If we keep playing good basketball and stay focused, we will succeed in the post season," said junior forward Tyler Moser. Classmate Alex Nielsen, Wakonda's starting center, thinks nothing has to improve for post season.
"We are playing good team basketball and everything seems to flow well. It just needs to continue."
Even though the Warriors are 3-2 against district foes in regular season, if one looks at the conference tournament Wakonda has beaten everyone but Centerville.
"We shot poorly and we were short-handed. I feel with everyone back, and if we shoot the way we are capable of, we have just as good of chance to win districts as anyone. It should be fun and exciting, and I'm looking forward to it," said coach Wright.
Centerville will host boys' districts this year. Seeds 1 and 2 of the boys' district games will earn a bye. Seeds 4 and 5 will see each other on March 1 at 6:30 p.m. After that game seeds 3 and seed 6 will play at 8 p.m. So come support your green and white, and cheer them on to a district championship.
