Coyotes sweep double-header The South Dakota baseball team (4-6) picked up a doubleheader sweep over Truman State March 10 at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, FL. The Coyotes notched an 11-6 win in the first game, for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
In the opener, USD trailed 3-2 heading into the top of the fifth, but scored five runs to take an 8-2 lead. A pair of two-run doubles by junior John Quade and sophomore Brian Boyer keyed the inning. The Coyotes added four runs in the top of the seventh to win.
In the nightcap, South Dakota was down 3-0 going into the bottom of the fifth, but scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth to knot the game up at 3-3. Junior Chris Fielder keyed the two-run sixth with an RBI triple that scored senior Bryan Hohenthaner from second.
The game was tied into the eighth with Truman State striking first with a run to take a 4-3 lead. In USD's half of the eighth, Chute opened with a single, but Boyer popped up a bunt attempt for the Coyotes first out. Hohenthaner responded with a double to advance Chute to third. Fielder, a native of Aliso Viejo, CA, again came up big for South Dakota with an RBI single to tie the game 4-4.
