Hohenthaner's homer gives USD win Senior Bryan Hohenthaner's solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the South Dakota baseball team (13-8) to a 9-8 win over Mount Marty Tuesday afternoon at Prentis Park in Vermillion.
Hohenthaner, a native of Sioux Falls, belted his second homer of the season over the left field fence to give the Coyotes their seventh win in a row. For the game, Hohenthaner went 1-for-5 with two RBI.
Junior Brian Kungl (Anaheim, CA) picked up the victory, pitching a scoreless top of the ninth, striking out one.
Four Coyotes recorded three hits, led by sophomore T.J. Schmidtke (Blue Earth, MN), who went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Junior John Quade (Sioux City, IA) was 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs batted in.
Junior Robin Chute (Chelsea, IA) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while junior Chris Fielder (Aliso Viejo, CA) was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
USD got off to a slow start to open the game, giving up five runs in the top of the first to the Lancers. South Dakota evened the game up at five with two runs in the first and three in the third.
Mount Marty regained the lead in the top of the fourth with Jesse Kurtenbach's solo homer to left, but the Coyotes answered with two run in the bottom half the inning to go up 7-6. After adding an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on a Quade RBI single, Mount Marty evened the game up at 8-8 with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the eighth.
Sophomore Tommy Baryo (Sioux City, IA) had a solid relief outing for the Coyotes, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing just three hits and two unearned runs.
