People who give blood have long been known as "silent heroes." They give the gift of life to people undergoing surgery, to people receiving treatment of cancer and other diseases, to mothers giving birth, to babies born prematurely, to trauma patients and to many others. Since it may take more than 48 hours to prepare some blood components, blood has to be on the shelf ready to use before it is needed. When there is an emergency, it is already too late to ask for donations for the patient.
Generally, most people who are 17-75 and over 110 pounds may donate blood. Anyone who is taking vitamins, hormones, birth control pills, diet pills or high blood pressure mediation can donate. However, people on antibiotics must wait 72 hours after the last dosage to give blood.
If a person had surgery, but did not receive a blood transfusion, they can donate as soon as the healing is complete. If the patient does receive a blood transfusion, they are not eligible to donate blood until 12 months after the surgery.
We urge anyone who is interested in becoming a blood donor to please take the time to do so. If you do, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have chosen one of the most selfless ways to help another human being someone whose life may depend upon your decision.
We cordially invite everyone to participate in the fun-filled activities planned for the day.
