Tanager freshmen rally to defeat Canton by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers rallied in the second half and then pulled away to beat the Canton C-Hawks 49-40 in boys' basketball Feb. 27 at Canton in a win capped by a 21-7 fourth-quarter surge.
The Vermillion freshmen had trailed by five after the third quarter.
"We fought back from a 2-5 record to get a winning record. I�m proud of the never-say-die attitude this team showed all season," said coach Kelly Knutson.
The Vermillion freshman team improved its season mark to 6-5, while Canton fell to 6-5.
Jeff Donnelly scored 22 points, and Ryan Powell contributed 11 points.
"Ryan Powell was on fire to get us a great start, and Jeff kept us in it the rest of the way," said coach Knutson.
The Tanagers jumped ahead 14-4 after the opening period, went into the locker room up 23-16 at halftime, and then trailed 33-28 after the third quarter.
The Vermillion freshmen held onto the win from the free throw line, making 17 of 25 charity tosses to 7 of 12 for Canton.
"With the exception of the third period, we played very well, especially recognizing different defenses," said coach Knutson.
Vermillion freshmen connected on 2 of 4 three-point tries. The Tanagers sank 15 of 42 field goals, while Canton was 16 of 46 from the field. Canton hit 1 of 5 three-point attempts.
The Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory. "Andrew Pearson and Bobby Dykstra played very hard and came up with some very big rebounds," coach Knutson said. "Our free throws helped us weather the storm, also."
