Tanagers roar back;

Tanagers roar back; defeat Raiders 28-25 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers roared back in the fourth quarter to squeak past the Gayville-Volin Raiders 28-25 in boys' basketball Feb. 17 at Gayville in a win capped by a 14-1 fourth-quarter surge.

The Vermillion freshmen had trailed by 10 going into the final period.

Jeff Donnelly scored 11 points, grabbed five rebounds and made four steals.

"Jeff knocked down some big shots for us in the fourth quarter," said Vermillion freshman coach Kelly Knutson.

The Tanagers trailed 11-6 after the first quarter, trailed 15-10 at halftime, and then trailed 24-14 going into the final period.

The Tanagers forced 21 Gayville-Volin turnovers to help the victory.

"We hung in there against a very physical, more experienced team and defensively dominated them in the fourth quarter," said coach Knutson.

In the last quarter, The Tanagers outscored Gayville-Volin 14-1.

"I couldn't be happier with the effort to make such a great comeback," coach Knutson said.

The Vermillion freshmen now have a record of 5-5, while Gayville-Volin fell to 6-5.

Vermillion connected on 3 of 13 three-pointers and connected on 3 of 15 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 8 of 31 from the field, while Gayville-Volin was 6 of 28 from the field. Gayville-Volin connected on 2 of 3 three-point tries and sank 7 of 12 free throw tries.

The winners needed good efforts from several performers. "Ryan Powell hit a huge three to get the ball rolling offensively in the fourth quarter," coach Knutson said. "Paul Hammond didn�t have great numbers, but his harassing defense turned the game around for us."
