USD baseball defeats Minnesota-Duluth The South Dakota baseball team moved to 7-8 on the season with a 6-5 win over Minnesota-Duluth Sunday at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, FL.
Junior Larry Mahoney (Garden Grove, CA) drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to push the Coyotes' record to 6-3 on their spring break trip. Junior John Quade (Sioux City, IA) opened up the inning with a single, before redshirt freshman Dustin Townsend (Council Bluffs, IA) pinch ran for Quade and stole second.
Senior Bryan Hohenthaner's (Sioux Falls) single moved Townsend over to third prior to Mahoney's game-winning hit.
Junior Brian Kungl (Anaheim, CA) picked up the victory, pitching three innings in relief, allowing one earned run and striking out two. Senior Matt
Huggett (Anaheim, CA) started the game for USD, allowing just one run and four hits in five innings of work while striking out seven.
Junior Robin Chute (Chelsea, IA) and sophomore T.J. Schmidtke (Blue Earth, MN) had two hits for the Coyotes, while junior Chris Fielder
(Alison Viejo, CA) had a two-run double.
On Saturday, South Dakota dropped a 16-4 decision to Minnesota-Duluth in a seven-inning contest. Freshman Josh Lundin (Rapid City) took the loss. At the plate, Chute and Schmidtke had two hits.
On Friday, USD notched a 4-3 win over Merrimack College, before falling to Wayne State (MI), 3-2, in the nightcap.
Against Merrimack, junior Robert Davis (Bell Flower, CA) picked up the victory and Fielder notched the save. Townsend, who was making his first career start, had two hits and a key RBI in the fifth inning.
