USD swimming & diving teams headed to nationals

USD swimming & diving teams headed to nationals The South Dakota men's and women's swimming and diving teams will take 14 team members to the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships on March 10-13 at Buffalo, NY.

The USD men, which recently placed second at the conference championships, has qualified nine individuals for nationals. The USD women's team, which was fourth at the NCC meet, has qualified five student-athletes for nationals.

A year ago, USD men's team finished ninth at the national meet, recording 159.50 points. The USD women's team was 15th nationally, scoring 65 points. In total, USD had 12 All-Americans a year ago.

As the team prepares for nationals, the prospects again are high for both South Dakota teams. Both South Dakota men's and women's swimming and diving teams have qualified all five of its relay squads. All five USD men's relay squads are ranked in the top 10 nationally. They include 200 Medley, second; 400 Free, third; 200 Free, eighth; 800 Free, eighth; and 400 Medley, 10th.

The women's relay squads are all ranked in the top 15 nationally, including 200 Free, 10th; 400 Free, 11th, 800 Free, 14th; 200 Medley, 14th, and 400 Medley, 14th. In addition USD has numerous individuals that will participate in individual events. The team leaves for Buffalo, NY, on Sunday.

Matt Lind � Kearney, NE � (200 IM, 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Breast, Relays) Lind is ranked 26th in the 200 free, 11th in the 100 fly, 21st in the 200 IM and 16th in the 400 IM

John Murman � Lincoln, NE � ( 200 IM, 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free, Relays )

Bram Olson � Hutchinson, NE � (50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free, 100 Fly, Relays). Olson is ranked 18th in the 200 Free, 21st in the 50 Free and 22nd in the 100 Free

Chuck Scribner � Hastings, NE � (Relays)

Alex Smith � Houston, TX � (50 Free, 100 Free, Relays)

Tyler Scheer � Lincoln, NE � (100 Fly, Relays). Scheer is ranked 20th nationally in the 100 Fly.

Dan Gay � Fairbury, NE � (1M, 3M Diving). Gay is ranked third in the 1M and second in the 3M diving competitions heading into nationals

Women's Team

Karen Burke � Carson City, NV � (Relays)

Audrey Donley � Arvada, CO � (500 Free, 1,000 Free, 1,650 Free, Relays). Donley, who has set a pair of USD school records this year, ranks 17th in the 1,000 free, 17th in the 1,650 free and 26th in the 500 Free

Abby Heinz � Sgt. Bluff, IA � (200 IM, 100 Fly, Relays). Heinz is ranked 23rd nationally in the 200 IM and 27th nationally in the 100 Fly.

Kari Kopecky � Roosevelt, MN � (50 Free, 100 Free, Relays). Kopecky is ranked 15th in the 50 Free and 27th in the 100 Free.

Lindsey Schafer � Mandan, ND � (1M and 3M Diving). Schafer ranks seventh in the 3M Diving and 11 in the 1M diving.
