Coyote baseball splits twin bill at North Dakota The South Dakota baseball team (18-12, 5-3 NCC) earned a split in a doubleheader against North Dakota April 4 at Kraft Field in Grand Forks, ND. The Coyotes took game one 6-2, before coming up short in the nightcap, 4-1.
Senior left-hander Matt Huggett (Anaheim, CA) improved his record to 3-0, by hurling 5.1 innings in game one, giving up just one earned run on six hits, while striking out seven. Junior Brian Kungl (Anaheim, CA) pitched the final 1.2 innings to record his fifth save of the season.
South Dakota trailed 2-0 through three innings of play, but chipped away in the top of the fourth with a run on junior John Quade's (Sioux City, IA) RBI single, which scored sophomore T.J. Schmidtke (Blue Earth, MN), who doubled.
In the fifth, the Coyotes scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead, including a solo home run by junior Cress Murdock (Lakewood, CA).
Sophomore Brian Boyer (Sioux City, IA) paced USD at the plate in the opener, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Schmidtke was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Quade was 2-for-3.
In game two, North Dakota scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 advantage, a lead it would not relinquish.
Coyote starter junior Daniel Sons (Moreno Valley, CA) gave up just one hit, but allowed three runs, two of which were earned, and six walks in 2.2 innings to fall to 1-5 on the season.
Junior Chris Fielder (Aliso Viejo, CA) was USD's only player with a multi-hit game in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
South Dakota returns to action Friday and Saturday when it hosts Augustana at Prentis Park in Vermillion. Doubleheaders each day will get underway at 1:30 p.m.
