Heart & Soul opens dance studio April 3 An idea that had been percolating since Heart & Soul Fitness Center owner Carol Strandell opened her business at 15 Court Street is ready and waiting for the sound of tapping shoes and of sliding slippers.
Heart & Soul Dance Studio, a dance studio that will offer ballet and tap, is set to open April 3 for children, ages 3 through 10.
"We are building it slowly," says Strandell, who envisions future classes for older children, teenagers and adults, "We ultimately are looking at having everything from jazz to ballroom dancing to line dancing."
The dance studio is located in the second story of the historic Thompson building on the corner of Court and Kidder streets. The second story, most of which is one large open space, is 7,500 square feet.
"It's a wonderful space with high ceilings, polished wood floors and plenty of sunlight," Strandell says, adding that workers are putting the finishing touches on the area that will have 30 feet of 8-foot high mirrors and bars for both children and adults when the studio opens Saturday, April 3 for its first six-week session.
Three dance instructors have been hired to begin teaching the Saturday sessions, which will begin with an hour session of both ballet and tap for three and four-year-olds at 8 a.m.
The 4 to 5-year-old children's ballet class will start at 9:30 a.m. followed by another ballet and tap combination class for 5 and 6-year-olds at 10:30 a.m.
A ballet class will start at noon for children ages 6 and 7. A ballet and tap combination class for 7 and 8 year olds will follow at 1 p.m., and another ballet class for children 8 to 9 years old will begin at 2:30 p.m. The last class, for 9 and 10-year-olds, will be another combination ballet and tap and will begin at 3:30 p.m.
"It's a full schedule, but we have had so much interest from parents in getting a dance studio started that we decided to fill the day," Strandell said. No more than 20 students are allowed in a class, and the classes are beginning to fill up, according to Strandell.
The cost of each six-week session is $35 per student.
Strandell and her staff are looking forward to working with the boys and girls who sign up. "They are such a delight," Strandell said. "And I hope their parents and grandparents will be just as delighted when they attend the last session on May 8 when the children will give a premiere performance."
Parents may stop by Heart & Soul Fitness Center or call the center at 624-6818 to sign up their children or to obtain further information.
