Irene-Wakonda Eagles win Haas championship by Nikki Johnston The Irene-Wakonda seventh grade girls traveled to Yankton on March 25 and 26 for the Roger Haas basketball tournament.
On Friday evening, the young Eagles played the 9:30 p.m. game versus Elk Point-Jefferson. The girls easily outplayed the Huskies winning 33-3.
Melanie Kathol and Kelli Johnston led the way with 8 points each. Brittany Bakke chipped in with 6, Casey Hessman had 4, Nicole Nielsen added 3 and Lacy Jensen and Tiffany Gleich helped out with 2 each.
On Saturday, the girls were able to sleep in as they played the 12:30 p.m. game versus Alcester-Hudson. This game was a little closer but the Eagles pulled away from the Cubs winning 28-19.
Johnston nailed down three clutch 3-pointers on her way to a game high 11 points. Kathol added 8, Bakke 4, and Jensen and Hessman 2 each.
In the championship game at 5:30 p.m., the opponent would be Bridgewater. At the end of the first quarter the score was 8-6 in favor of the Eagles.
It looked as though the game would go down to the last second to determine a winner. However, the score at the end of three quarters was 18-6. The young determined Irene-Wakonda girls held Bridgewater scoreless for two quarters. Then in the fourth quarter the Eagles executed some offense taking time off the clock as they out played the Wildcats to a final score of 25-12.

with 12 points, Johnston added 7, Bakke 3, Jensen 2 and Nielsen added a free throw.
"We saw Bridgewater beat Parker in their semifinal game and they looked very good," said coach Rocky Johnston. "I was a little afraid of Bridgewater in that championship game. However, our girls had more hustle and desire. I was very proud of the way they played. With Irene-Wakonda playing together these girls were able to experience the thrill of victory."
