Seventh-graders place second at tourney The seventh-grader travel team ended its season with a second place finish at the Roger Haas Tourney in Yankton on March 26 and 27.
Vermillion met Alcester/ Hudson on Friday night and after a close first quarter, the team built the lead to 13 by the end of the 2nd quarter. The final score was Vermillion 54 Alcester/Hudson 17. Hartington Cedar Catholic advanced to the semi finals by defeating West Central. Vermillion jumped out to a 13-6 lead after one quarter.
The game remained close with Vermillion holding a 35-24 lead after three quarters. Vermillion handled full court pressure effectively in the fourth quarter and expanded their lead, defeating Hartington Cedar Catholic 48-30.
In the championship game, Vermillion took advantage of Hartington Public's zone press and built a 10 point lead early in the first half. Hartington took the press off and used a 1-3-1 zone defense for the rest of the game. Vermillion held a 21-19 lead at half.
Hartington hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer to end the first half and carried that momentum into the third quarter, outscoring Vermillion 16-6 to take a 35-27 lead after three quarters.
Vermillion cut the lead to 4 with two minutes remaining but could get no closer and were defeated by a final score of 44-36.
Vermillion also earned second place honors at the Elk Point, Garretson and Centerville tourneys. Vermillion finished with a 12-10 record.
