Spring soccer season opens in Vermillion Cotton Park was again alive with soccer on April 4 as four area teams took advantage of the warm spring weather of kick-off the season in Vermillion.
In the first game of the afternoon, a combined Vermillion U-16/U-19 team played host to Dakota Gold Millennium. After conceding a pair of early goals, the Vermillion defense settled down and the game ended with a 3-0 victory for Dakota Gold. The best Vermillion scoring chance came when speedy striker Emma Erickson made a strong run on goal, only to see her shot hit the post. Kat Redlin and Sarah Christopherson shared goal keeper duties for Vermillion.
In the second match of the day, the USD Men's Club Team played host to the Sioux Falls Rapids U-17 team which featured Vermillion's Sean Pederson as goal keeper. In a very physical game that tested the stamina of both teams, the Rapids prevailed by a score of 2-0, with Pederson recording three saves to earn the shutout in goal. Sean Guthmiller and Eric Guzman each scored one goal in the winning effort.
Spring play for the Vermillion Youth Soccer League opens on April 17 with games scheduled for U-6, U-8, U-10, U-12, and U-14 teams. This spring, all U-12 games will be played on the new field located directly behind the W.H. Over Museum.
