USD men win one, lose one Saturday The South Dakota baseball team (17-11, 4-2 NCC) split a twin bill with North Dakota April 3 at Kraft Field in Grand Forks, ND. The Coyotes took game one 7-0, but dropped the second contest, 7-6.
Freshman Josh Lundin hurled a complete-game, five-hitter in the opener, striking out eight and walking just one batter to up his record to 4-1 on the season. The Rapid City native leads the NCC in strikeouts this season with 51 and lowered his earned run average to 2.90 with his second consecutive complete game.
Senior Bryan Hohenthaner (Sioux Falls) continued his hot hitting at the plate for the Coyotes, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run homer in USD's six-run sixth inning.
It was Hohenthaner's third round tripper of the season. Junior Robin Chute (Chelsea, IA) added a three-run home run in the sixth inning as well.
Sophomore T.J. Schmidtke (Blue Earth, MN) went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the opener.
In game two, South Dakota trailed 6-3 heading into the top half of the sixth, but tied the game up at 6-6 on a two-RBI single by Chute, who was 3-for-4 with a run scored in the nightcap.
North Dakota answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to take a 7-6 lead it would not relinquish.
At the plate in game two, sophomore Brian Boyer (Sioux City, IA) was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while junior Chris Fielder (Aliso Viejo, CA) went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
