USD splits twin bill with St. Cloud State Coyote left-hander Josh Lundin of Rapid City pitched a complete-game three-hitter in the opening game of a double-header with St. Cloud State Monday at Prentis Park. Lundin struck out 11 batters, and improved his season record to 3-1. The South Dakota baseball team (16-10, 3-1 NCC) split a doubleheader with St. Cloud State Monday afternoon at Prentis Park in Vermillion. USD took game one 5-1, before falling in the second game, 2-1.
True freshman left-hander Josh Lundin (Rapid City) pitched a complete-game three-hitter in the opener, while striking out 11. Lundin improved his season record to 3-1.
Senior Bryan Hohenthaner (Sioux Falls) led the Coyotes at the plate in game one, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.
Junior Robin Chute (Chelsea, IA) had a two-RBI single in USD's three-run fifth inning that took control of the game for the Coyotes.
In game two, the game was tied at 1-1 heading into the top of the sixth, before St. Cloud State's Nate Swan belted the first pitch of the inning over the left field fence to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
On the mound, SCSU's Jeremy Liebherr picked up the victory, allowing just eight hits and one unearned run in 7.0 innings of work. For the Coyotes,
junior Daniel Sons (Moreno Valley, CA) took the loss, giving up two runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings. Sons, who struck out five, fell to 1-4 on the year.
Hohenthaner went 2-for-2, while Chute was 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Junior Bobby Sullivan (Mitchell) was 2-for-3 at the plate in the second game.
South Dakota returns to action April 3-4 against North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND.
