USD takes doubleheader from St. Cloud State The South Dakota baseball team (15-9, 2-0 NCC) opened its NCC schedule with a pair of wins over St. Cloud State Sunday afternoon at Prentis Park in Vermillion. The Coyotes took game one 9-4, before notching a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, sophomore T.J. Schmidtke (Blue Earth, MN) paced the Coyotes, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Junior Robin Chute (Chelsea, IA) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while redshirt freshman Dustin Townsend (Council Bluffs, IA) was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Senior left-hander Matt Huggett (Anaheim, CA) notched the victory (2-0), pitching 6.0 innings, allowing just six hits and two earned runs, and striking out five.
In game two, junior right-hander Justin Carey (Elkhorn, NE) upped his record to 3-1 on the season by allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out five Husky batters.
Chute, Schmidtke, Townsend and junior Vincent Flores (Van Horn, TX) all went 2-for-3 at the plate in the nightcap.
Schmidtke, who upped his batting average to .510 by going 5-for-6 on Sunday, added two RBI in game two.
The Coyotes and St. Cloud State will close out the four-game series Monday with a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. at Prentis Park.
