Vermillion players are Roger Haas champs On March 6, a group of girls from Vermillion captured the championship trophy at the 14th Annual Roger Haas Basketball Tournament held in Yankton. The Vermillion girls went undefeated participating in the top bracket of the ninth grade division. Stewart Oil & Tire sponsored the team.
Vermillion started off with a hard-fought battle against Yankton's A team, pulling away at the end and winning by a score of 38-31. Scoring went as follows: Chelsea Gauer, 11; Alicia Brown, 9; Annie Roche, 9; Kinsey Weydert, 5; Anna Isaacson, 2, and Annika Sjolie, 2.
The next win came against a team from LeMars, IA. The Vermillion girls dominated from start to finish, winning 45-30. Scoring for Vermillion were: Brittni Stewart, 10; Brown, 10; Gauer, 8; Roche, 6; Sjolie, 6; Weydert, 3, and Isaacson, 2.
Vermillion's foe in the championship game was a very talented team from Salem. Vermillion started off sluggish and fell behind 0-9 to begin the contest. After a timeout, the locals outscored Salem 50-26 the rest of the way, winning with a final score of 50-35. Scoring for Vermillion were: Roche, 17; Brown, 16; Gauer, 6; Weydert, 4; Stewart, 3; Kristina Blythe, 2, and Sjolie, 2.
