VHS baseball team scores first win of the 2004 season by Jim Prosser The Tanagers improved their baseball season record by a third when they won at Harrisburg on Sunday, April 4.
Coach Jason Gault was satisfied with the team's improved defense but wondered where the hitting offense went. They scored 9 runs but had only 5 hits as the Tigers committed 4 errors, 2 hit batsmen, and 5 walks to aid the Tanager cause. The game was a pitching gem by B.J. Campbell and Brad Schaack who, combined, threw a 2 hitter.
Campbell started and went 4 2/3 innings giving up 1 hit and 2 earned runs registering 4 Ks claiming the victory. Schaack relieved for 2 1/3 innings surrendering 1 run, 1 hit, 4 walks while collecting 5 Ks and was credited with a save.
The overall effort was marred by 4 errors (2 of which led to runs).
Line scores: Vermillion � 9 runs, 5 hits, 4 errors, 6 lob; Harrisburg � 4 runs, 2 hits, 5 errors, 8 lob.
Tanager runs were scored by seven individuals � B.J. Campbell, Ben Oberle, Kyle Mollet, Collin Prosser, Jason Donald and Brad Schaack each scored one run. Prosser went 1 for 3 with 2 rbi 1 sac.; Schaack was 1 for 2 with 2 rbi; and Ryan Mockler scored 3 times, walked twice and was 1 for 2 hitting with 1 rbi. Sam Laprath drove in a run on 1 for 4 batting.
The varsity team season record improved to 1-2.
