Auxiliary to offer poppies The Wakonda American Legion Auxiliary will be offering poppies over the next several weeks before Memorial Day. In the spring of 1919, amidst complete devastation, the poppies bloomed in abundance on the battlefields of France where so many of our soldiers had fallen in battle.
One hundred percent of the profits from the poppy contributions go to welfare relief for servicemen and servicewomen and their families for all that they have done to insure freedom for us. Containers can be found in various business places and the Auxiliary will be available at the Wakonda school music concerts on May 6 and May 11.
The Poppy Poster contest was held in the Wakonda elementary school and the winners were:First place, Chelsey Steffen; second place, Roxanne Polley; third place, Mandy Steffen.Congratulation to these young people.
The Wakonda American Legion Auxiliary meets every third Wednesday at the Wakonda Heritage Manor at 7:30 p.m. Anyone who has a military relationship within their family is welcome to become members and you are always welcome to visit.
Our next project will be to honor 18 members who have belonged to this group for over 40 years. We will also be holding our annual ham dinner on Memorial Day, May 31, following the program at the memorial.
