Final students of the month named Nichole Nelson and Nathan Boots were named as the Vermillion High School Students of the Month for April. First National Bank in Vermillion will reward these two with $100 scholarships for their excellence in the classroom and in their activities.
Nelson "is a student who will go the extra mile in all her tasks," according to her faculty endorsement. Her high school activities have included German Club, Science Club, basketball, track, volleyball, band and cross country. She received a Freshman Scholarship Award, was selected to the National Honor Society and attended Girls State.
At the time of nomination, Nelson was planning to attend either the University of Wyoming or the University of North Dakota to major in kinesiology or physical therapy. Her parents are Glenn and Anita Nelson.
Boots has combined perfection in the classroom with his athletic prowess in two sports. Along with his 4.0 GPA, he has been Academic All-State in both golf and basketball. He is a three-time All-State golfer, along with being named a co-captain for both sports.
Additionally, he has been on the yearbook staff, a tutor, in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and in National Honor Society. His college plans are to enroll in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota majoring in actuarial science. His parents are David and Peggy Boots.
The previous 2003-2004 recipients were Jared Burcham and Holly Heaton � September; Collette Joy and Justin Manning � October; Cori Bazemore and B.J. Campbell � November; Andy Hayner and Lindsey Isaacson � December; Adam Brunick and Sarah Merrigan � January; Heather Heine and Collin Prosser � February; and Zachary Holoch and Kathleen Redlin � March.
Other VHS students honored with faculty nominations were David Yutrzenka, Geng Wang, Robin Rolston, Sarah Roetman, Mallory Papke, Kayla Mollet, Bridget Jacobson, Kendra Gottsleben, Xavie Flores, and Paul Abourezk.
This is the seventh year of the Student of the Month program at Vermillion High School and First National Bank�Vermillion has awarded $11,200 in scholarships since 1997.
