Iditarod racer visits students by Amber Skjonsberg Placing in the Iditarod isn't Vern Halter's only mission in life. This Flandreau native spends many days going from school to school educating kids about this amazing race.
On May 6, he brought his sled dogs to Irene Elementary School to help demonstrate what this famed race across Alaska is all about. Wakonda Elementary children traveled to Irene to hear the presentation.
The students learned the sled dog commands and met Halter's sled dogs. The kids all had a lot of fun listening to Halter talk about his experience participating in this year's Iditarod. We wish him the best of luck for next year.
