Tanager baseball team loses squeaker in Irene by Jim Prosser In a return engagement the Tanagers, cold weather and all, fought through a 7-inning, 10-9 loss to the Irene/Volin/Wakonda Gamecocks in Irene's ball park, on Sunday, May 2.
VHS's Ben Oberle started and gave up two runs in the first inning. The team clawed to a 3-2 lead, having scored one run each in the first three innings.
They built the lead to 5-2 with a two-run fourth before the "roof fell in" on Oberle as he gave up five runs on four hits in the bottom half of the fourth and had to turn the pitching task over to Jason Donald.
The Tanagers cut the Gamecocks' lead to 7-6, scoring one in the fifth, but the home team scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-6 lead. The visitors came back with three runs in the sixth but couldn't get another over the plate, leaving two men on base and losing the game 10-9.
Oberle was charged with the loss, giving up seven runs on five hits and six walks, registering two Ks. Donald relieved and allowed three runs on two hits and four walks along with three Ks.

Campbell who had 2 doubles in 4 at bats; Collin Prosser had a triple and scored a run; Jared Burcham went 3 for 4 with 2 runs and 2 rbis; Brad Schaack had an rbi; and John Gregg scored a run in a pinch hitting role.
The varsity season record stands at 4-8.
