Three Tanagers to head south to Wayne State

Three Tanagers to head south to Wayne State by Jim Prosser Stuff happens! Bob "Cubs" Bowker finally has a reason to visit his alma mater on Saturdays next fall. Three former Tanager football players are headed for Wayne State College where they will be on the Wildcat squad.

All three had exceptional senior football accomplishments and are expected to be useful members at their new school. Each has been a multiple sport athlete: Tyler Brown (cross country, football, track and field, and basketball); B.J. Campbell (rrack, baseball, and football); Collin Prosser (football, basketball, and baseball).

Tanager football coach Gary Culver has given me the resums for these three football players along with his remarks about each of their contributions to the Vermillion High School 2003 program.

Tyler Brown: Wide receiver/cornerback offensive stats: Caught 18 passes for 342 yds. (19 per catch); rushed for 160 yds. on 22 carries (7.3 avg.); scored 7 touchdowns, kicked 4 PAT, 1 field goal and a 2 pt. conversion. Defense: 29 tackles, 2 pass interceptions, returned for 63 yds. total; returned 8 punts totaling 154 yds., 9 kickoffs for 218 yds. total. Selected All State Wide Receiver by SDFBCA in 2003; Big 8 All-Conference ('03); selected as outstanding receiver, defensive back, and specialty team player on VHS team.

Evaluation: "Tyler had an unbelievable senior campaign for the Tanagers," Culver said. "He combines his outstanding quickness and great leaping ability to be capable of threatening to score every time he touches the ball (in competition). He broke open a number of our games last fall with his skills."

B.J. Campbell: Tailback/cornerback 2003 stats: Rushed 149 times for 873 yds. (5.9/carry); scored a team leading 11 TDs; caught 1 pass for 9 yds.; recorded 50 tackles; had 2 interceptions returned for 63 total yds.; returned 9 punts for 81 yds. Big 8 All-Conference; selected as outstanding offensive back on VHS team.

Career information: In the past three years Rushed 326 times for 2114 yds.; scored 22 TDs; returned 17 punts for 137 yds.; recorded 92 tackles; All conference ('03), Honorable Mention ('02); Outstanding Back on VHS team ('02 and '03).

B.J. led the Tanagers to a 21-10 overall record the past three years and appearances in the quarterfinals in 2002 and 2003, and the semi's in 2001.

Evaluation: "B.J. combines his speed and quickness to be able to play both sides of the ball equally well," Culver said. "He has the ability to breack the 'big play' on every down. He has been a major contributor to our success the past three years."

Collin Prosser: Tight end/defensive end/long snapper 2003 stats and honors: Second on team with 82 tackles; broke up or hurried 11 passes; 4 QB sacks; intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble; caught 10 passes for 190 yds. and 2 TDs; outstanding long snapper for punts and FG/PATs; team captain and selected as outstanding defensive lineman on VHS team; Big 8 All-Conference; SDFBCA All-State Defensive end (honorable mention); Sioux Falls Argus Leader Elite 45 All State player (honorable mention); selected to participate in the 2004 North-South All-Star football game in Aberdeen.

Career information: Two-year, two-way starter at end; recorded 189 total tackles the last 3 years; had a total 13 QB sacks and broke up 14 passes; Big 8 All-Conference ('02).

The team's record during Collin's 3 years of participation included 7-4 ('01), 7-3 ('02), and 7-3 ('03); and the state tournament experiences like B.J. Campbell.

Evaluation: "Collin is a great hitter and rarely comes off the field," Culver said. "He has a great passion for the game of football and plays with exceptional emotion. He plays the game as it was meant to be played. He was also a major contributor to our success the past three years."
