VHS girls' team has field day at QB Club Relays by Jim Prosser There were nine schools represented at the Yankton Quarterback Club Relays last Thursday, May 6, contested at the Yankton Athletic Complex: Brandon Valley, Dakota Valley, Hanson Co., Huron, Lennox, Mitchell, O'Gorman, Vermillion, and Yankton.
There were two divisions for several events � varsity and sophomore. The Tanagers placed seventh in both divisions, but the girls' track team had some excellent results:
Varsity: Anne Carlson placed second in the high jump with a state qualifying 5', fourth (16'2") in the long jump, also a state qualifier, then topped her performance with a first place in the triple jump � 35'2.5", another qualifier! Annie Roche was in the top 10 of the event. Nicki Nelson was in the top 10 in the 100m dash; and Mona Otto was ninth in the 200m. In the 400m seventh and ninth were claimed by Heather Heine and Brittney Babb.
Distance runs: Sarah Plate was in the top 15 in both the 800m and 1600m. The relay team results were: 4x100m relay � fifth (Ariel Hofman, Brittany Weydert, Alexa Walker, and Otto); 4x200m relay � second (Babb, Roche, Heine, and Nicki Nelson); 4x400m relay � fourth (Heine, Babb, Roche, Walker); 4x800m relay � third (Gilkyson, Emily Renner, Katarina Gombocz, and Morgan Brooks); sprint medley relay � fifth (Hofman, Carlson, Walker, and Gombocz).
The sophomore or younger competitors had the following results for the Tanager girls:
100m hurdles � Kinsey Weydert won with an 18.03 second time, and she placed third in the 300m hurdles. Ariel Hofman was second in the 100m dash; Annie Roche won the long jump (14'9.5"); and Brittni Stewart placed fourth in the triple jump, and put the shot 25'7" for a 12th place. Finally, Katie Kashas and Kayla Anglin were in the top 15 for the discus throw.
You probably already know this, but just in case � at the Howard Wood Relays a couple weeks ago, Alicia Brown was third in the 100m dash running with a premiere group of eight. Her best time came in the semi finals (12.51); also � the 4×400 relay team ran a state qualifying time of 4:09.98 while placing sixth (Heine, Babb, Walker, and Brown).
