Guatemalan weaver visits Vermillion Clemente Ruiz, a master weaver from Guatemala, will be the guest of Sharing the Dream in Guatemala at a reception on Wednesday, June 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Sharing the Dream's store on Main Street in Vermillion.
Ruiz works with a group of textile cooperatives in Guatemala called Mayan Hands helping them design and produce crafts for sale. Many Mayan Hands products are featured at the Sharing the Dream store. Ruiz is in the United States to learn more about our culture and the U.S. marketplace and to share his own traditions, culture and knowledge of Guatemala with people here.
Everyone is invited to attend the reception, meet and visit with Ruiz, learn more about his craft and see some of the products his group makes. Refreshments will be served.
Sharing the Dream in Guatemala is a fair trade organization which works with over 60 artisan groups in Guatemala. Artisans are paid a living wage to produce the crafts and profits are returned to Guate-mala to fund projects and programs that benefit the poor.
Everyone who works with Sharing the Dream in Guatemala in the United States is a volunteer. The Sharing the Dream store, at 125 E. Main in downtown Vermillion, opened in March.
