Irish continue winning ways; win 2 against Gayville/Volin by Jim Prosser The Vermillion U-18 Irish softball team continued its winning ways by taking two games from Gayville/Volin at the Vermillion Armory field on Tuesday, June 15.
The first game was an extra-inning cliff hanger which the Irish won 6-5 when Kelsie Austin scored the run driven in by starting pitcher Sandy Bouck in the final inning, to give herself the victory.
Scoring for Vermillion were: Austin 3 for 3, three RBIs, one run; Alisha O'Connor, 1 for 2, one run, two sacs; Bouck � 2 for 4, two RBIs; Brooke Nelson one run; Paige Prosser � 1 for 3, one run; and Brittney Campbell � 2 for 3, two runs.
Game two was a pitching gem by Whitney Tolsma as she shut down the opposition with a superb streak of eight strikeouts in a row during a four-inning stretch. She was charged with four hits and gave up two runs but overall she registered 10 Ks and the 13-2 game winning pitcher designation.
The offensive stats include: Austin � four runs on four hits one rbi; Alisha O'Connor � two runs; Walker � 3 for 3, one rbi; Tolsma � 2 for 4, one run, three RBIs; Campbell � 2 for 3 hits, three runs; Megan Deaver � 1 for 3, two runs; and finally Sandy Bouck � 1 for 4, but it was a bases loaded, fence clearing, monstrous homerun!
The team's season record is 6-0.
