Jay Merrigan a letter winner at Morningside Jay Merrigan, a senior outfielder from Vermillion, was a varsity letterwinner for the Morningside College baseball team during the 2004 season.
Merrigan played in 46 games, including 39 starts. He collected 26 hits in 112 at-bats for a .232 batting average with six doubles, three triples, nine RBIs, 22 runs scored, 20 base on balls, seven sacrifices, and nine stolen bases. He was the Mustangs co-leader with his three triples.
He had a season's high three runs scored in a March 8 game against Pittsburg State University while he was in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak that extended from Feb. 28 to March 8. Merrigan had nine hits in 27 at-bats for a .333 batting average during the hitting streak.
Merrigan, a two-year letterwinner, had 40 hits in 196 at-bats for a .204 batting average with seven doubles, four triples, one home run, 19 RBIs, 40 runs scored, 41 base on balls, and 17 stolen bases during his Morningside career.
He is a 1999 graduate of Vermillion High School.
Morningside finished the 2004 season with a 27-27 record following an 11-20-1 finish the year before.
