Legion Post #1 baseball team a sad tale, twice told

Legion Post #1 baseball team a sad tale, twice told by Jim Prosser When the season opener doubleheader started with a base runner for the young Vermillion team, hopes for a good start were high. However, the first game became a nightmare as Elk Point/Jefferson's Ken Willis tossed a no hitter, and Post #1's pitcher Kyle Mollet was saddled with the 8-0 loss.

Statistics for the game are: Post #1 0 H, 0 R, 0 E, 4 lob; EP/J 8 R, 7 H, 3 E, 2 lob.

Curt Truhe led the home team scoring twice and Willis drove in three runs with a double. Ross Wilcox went 2 for 3 batting for the winners.

In game two, Vermillion out-hit EP/J 10-6, but lost the conflict 10-8. In spite of a five-run outburst in the first inning and an 8-6 lead after four, the visitors couldn't "stop the bleeding" as EP/J took advantage of four walks and an error, following two base hits to accumulate four runs in the fifth.

Brad Schaack was the starting pitcher giving up five runs (one unearned) on four hits, three Ks, two BBs and a team defensive three errors. Jason Donald took over and went 2 2/3 innings surrendering five runs (three earned) on two hits, three Ks, five walks and the other team error, to suffer the loss.

Offense for Post #1 included: Jared Burcham 3 for 5, one run, two RBIs; B.J. Campbell 1 for 4, one run; Kyle Mollet 1 for 3, one rbi; Chris Chase 2 for 3, two runs, one rbi; Zach Weisz 2 for 3, three RBIs; and Eric Chase 1 for 4, two runs scored. Ben Oberle and Jordan Anderson each scored once.

Season record is 0-2 prior to the Lewis & Clark Wood Bat Tournament involving 10 teams and two sites Vermillion and Yankton on June 11, 12, and 13.
