Obituaries Donald Flynn
Donald Francis Flynn, 88, of Irene, died Friday, June 4, 2004 at his home in Irene.
He was the youngest of 12 children, born July 28, 1915 to Edward and Mary Ellen Crawford Flynn on the Flynn homestead northeast of Irene.� He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wakonda.�He attended Dane-ville Country School and graduated from Irene High School in 1935.
He helped on the family farm until he was drafted into the Army Air Corps Dec. 3, 1941.� He served in the South Pacific during WWII.�He was honorably discharged Oct. 7, 1945.� He was a staff sergeant, decorated with a good conduct medal, American Defense Service Ribbon with Star and a Philippines Liberation Ribbon with Star.
He married Esther E. Saugstad April 6, 1942 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Charlotte, NC, by Fr. Maurice McDonald.
He and his brother Elmer built and operated a service station and caf� in Yankton.� He later owned and operated Flynn Brothers used car lot.� He also farmed northeast of Irene.�He retired from farming in the early 1990s. He enjoyed music, playing the guitar and being with his family and friends.
Blessed to have shared his life are his wife of 62 years, Esther of Irene; daughter, Mary Ellen (Dennis Sr.) Fischer, Tripp; son, James Flynn, Yankton; six grandchildren, Dennis (Sherry) Fischer Jr., Terry (Sheri) Fischer, and Sherry Zeigler, all of Tripp, Heather (Mike) Logue, Volin, Gabriel Flynn and special friend Beth, Volin, and Georgilee Flynn, Yankton; 13 great-grandchildren, Brittany, Dustin and Cody Fischer, Patricia, Malorie and Dalton Fischer, Kelley and Morgan Ziegler; all of Tripp, Brady, Garrett, Evan and Baby Logue, Volin, and Morgan Mason, Yankton; two sisters-in-law, Alice Thompson, Irene, and Inez Gravholt, Yankton; a brother-in-law, Earl Saugstad, Yankton; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and six sisters. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.�He was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather.�
He was a lifelong member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hall Thompson Post #193 of the American Legion, Irene, and Ernest Bowyer VFW Post #791 of Yankton.�He was an American by birth and choice, an Irishman by pride.
Visitation was Tuesday, June 8, at 2 p.m. with a rosary beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a scripture service at the Hansen Funeral Home in Irene.�
Funeral Mass was 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Wakonda. Pallbearers were Dennis Fischer Jr., Terry Fischer, Gabriel Flynn, Sherry Ziegler, Heather Logue, and Georgilee Flynn.�Burial followed in St. Columkill Cemetery, rural Wakonda, with military graveside rites by Hall Thompson Post #193 of Irene.
Grace B. Chausee
The family of Grace B. Chaussee, 95, of Sunnyvale, CA, announces her recent death on May 20, 2004.
There will be a graveside service June 17 at 2 p.m. at BluffView Cemetery. Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, will be in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Chaussee, formerly of Vermillion, was preceded in death by her parents, William and Vernie Beuttler; her husband, Wilfred (Ham) Chaussee; and by her brother, William Lee Beuttler. She was the beloved mother of Denny Chaussee of Sunnyvale, CA.
She is survived by a sister, Vernie Merrimam (Merry) Kaune of Seattle, WA; and by two grandchildren, Mark of San Diego, CA, and Jeff of Sunnyvale, CA; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Chaussee was born in Dixon, IL, Nov. 8, 1908. She was raised in Sioux City, IA, where she attended Central High School. She received an AA degree from Stephens College in Columbia, MO, and a BA degree from The University of South Dakota. She did post graduate work at the USD Medical School.
She worked various jobs while in Vermillion before settling on a career in the banking industry as a teller. She would continue this occupation until 1987 at which time she retired and went to live with her son, Denny, and his wife Marcy Chaussee in Sunnyvale, CA.
