Softball season begins in region

Softball season begins in region by Jim Prosser The Dakota Fastpitch/Modified League involves girls' teams from the following communities: Canton, Dakota Valley, Elk Point, Gayville, Irene, Vermillion, Viborg, Volin, Wakonda, and Yankton. There are U-18, U-16, U-14, and U-12 divisions in the league.

The games are played under the auspices of the Softball League with area businesses acting as sponsors.

The season opened on Tuesday, June 1. There will be games every Tuesday and Thursday through July 15 with the Vermillion Modified Invitational Tournament contested on Saturday and Sunday, June 12-13.

My intention is to cover as many of the games as possible, depending on the coaches aiding with stats.

Games played on June 1 involved Vermillion U-18 "Irish" vs. Viborg in a doubleheader.

The first game was a five inning affair which the Irish won 10-9 when they scored three runs in the final inning to give pitcher Whitney Tolsma the victory. Scoring for Vermillion were: Collette Joy (2 runs); Heather Walker (2); Tolsma (2); Brittney Campbell, Brooke Nelson, Kelsie Austin, and Megan Deaver, each scored once.

Game 2 was also an Irish victory 12-9. The winning pitcher was Brittney Campbell and the stats include: Joy � 3 runs on 2 hits; Alisha O'Connor � 4 for 4 batting including 2 doubles, 2 runs, 1 RBI; Walker � a double and a triple, 2 runs, 3 RBIs; Tolsma � 2 for 3, 1 run, 2 RBIs; Campbell � 1 hit, 1 run, 1 RBI; Nelson � 1 run; Paige Prosser � 1 for 3, 1 run, 1 RBI; Austin � 1 run.

The other June 1 games for Vermillion teams were either shorthanded, or rained out

Game one: WP � Ariel Hofman. Scoring stats: Annie Roche � 1 for 1, 3 runs; Brittni Stewart � 1 for 1, 1 run; Alicia Brown � 1 for 1, 1 run; Breann Lueders � 1 for 1, 2 BB, 1 run; Sheina Hays � 2 for 3, 1 run; Hofman � 3 for 3, 1 dbl., 2 runs; Tristin Upward and Michelle Olson each scored a run.

Game two: WP � Alicia Brown. Scoring stats: Brown � 2 for 2, 1 BB, 3 runs; Roche � 2 for 2, 1BB, 3 runs; Hofman � 2 for 2 including a dbl., 1 BB, 1 run; Anna Isaacson, 2 � 3, 1 run; Stewart , 2 � 3 including a triple, 2 runs; Kinsey Weydert, 1 � 1 (a dbl.), 3 runs; Olson � 1 for 2, 1 run; Samantha Haakinson � 1 for 1, 2 BB, 2 runs; Mary Ann Bierle � 1 for 1, 1 BB, 2 runs.
