Vermillion Legion, Grey Sox play June 1 game

Vermillion Legion, Grey Sox play June 1 game by Jim Prosser It was like "old home week" last Tuesday, June 1, when a scheduled game against Beresford was cancelled due to their having spent the Memorial Day weekend winning the State Class B tournament. Hopefully, the game will be rescheduled.

To fill the date, the Vermillion Grey Sox agreed to be the opponent for Post #1. The Grey Sox roster includes several former Post #1 players so there was a friendly respect for each other's teams.

Brad Schaack gave a super pitching effort by going three innings, holding the Grey Sox scoreless as the "home" team took a 1-0 lead after three innings.

Jason Donald was also sailing along for two scoreless innings, and Post #1 increased its lead to 3-0.

Then, the wheels fell off as Donald's fast balls were going too high or too low and his off- speed pitches kept missing the corners of the plate. And before they could recover from the shock, three walks and a single brought in reliever Eric Chase. Unfortunately, an error and a double followed by another walk and a second error gave the Grey Sox a six run inning and led to the final 7-3 win.

The visitors also used three pitchers Brett Mockler, Ryan Baedke, and Jesse Paulson. Baedke gained the win, Donald suffered the loss.

Line scores: Grey Sox 7 runs, 6 hits, 2 errors, 9 LOB; Post #1 3 runs, 9 hits, 3 errors, 9 LOB.

Leading the Legion team's offense was: Chris Chase 3 for 4, 1 run; Ryan Mockler 2 for 4, 1 run, 1 RBI; Eric Chase drove in a run; and Ben Oberle scored a run.

Grey Sox stats were: Brett Mockler 2 for 3, 2 runs; Jeff Gilbertson, Paulson, Nick Mayer, Baedke, and Nick Shoup each scored a run and Mayer was credited with 2 RBIs.
