We mourn the loss of a great man by Nathan Mertz, South Dakota College Republicans Saturday, June 5 was a sad day in American history as former President Ronald Reagan passed away.
Many of the members of the South Dakota College Republicans were not even born when President Reagan was elected, but all of us have been impacted in so many ways by his selfless dedication to freedom.
As citizens of a post-Reagan America, we owe President Reagan a great deal of gratitude first and foremost for ending the Cold War. With the ending of the Cold War, President Reagan ensured that our generation would not have to deal with a Communist Soviet Union in the future.
Reagan also taught our generation a great deal about the importance of never forgetting how precious freedom really is. President Reagan once said, Freedom is not something to be secured in any one moment of time. We must struggle to preserve it every day. And freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.
It has been a privilege to have grown up in this post-Reagan era, said Nathan Mertz, chairman of the South Dakota College Republicans. As chairman of the South Dakota College Republicans, I see through President Reagan how strong leadership, unflinching vision, and clear communication left America a much better place.
On behalf of the South Dakota College Republicans I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Nancy Reagan and the entire Reagan family. We mourn the loss of a great man along with you.
