Heart of Tomorrow Scholarship recipients named Sioux Valley Hospitals & Health System recently awarded $1,000 academic scholarships to 100 dependent children of Sioux Valley employees from throughout the healthcare system.
Area students, Kaia Nelson and Brittany Salonen were awarded a 2004 Sioux Valley Heart of Tomorrow Scholarship. Nelson is the daughter of Jane and Bill Nelson. Jane Nelson is a registered nurse at Sioux Valley Vermillion Medical Center. She has worked as an RN at Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital for the past 16 years.
Salonen is the daughter of Lori and Mike Salonen. Lori Salonen is a respiratory therapist at Sioux Valley Vermillion Medical Center (SVVMC). She has worked as an RT at SVVMC for the past three years.
Kaia Nelson recently graduated from Vermillion High School. She plans to enroll in the college of nursing at South Dakota State University in Brookings. Upon graduation, Nelson plans to pursue a career in nursing.
Brittany Salonen recently graduated from Yankton High School. She plans to enroll in the college of education and human sciences at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, NE. Upon graduation, Salonen plans to pursue a career in merchandising.
The Heart of Tomorrow Scholarship Program is an investment that Sioux Valley makes in future leaders. Children of Sioux Valley employees are invited each year to apply for the 100 scholarships.
All full-time, part-time or unscheduled part-time employees' dependent children under the age of 24 who plan to enroll or are currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited post-secondary can apply. This year, over 277 applications were received and reviewed.
