Heat takes toll on players during championship by Jim Prosser The third round of the Dakota Softball Tourney had The U-18 Irish paired with JFI Heat (Canton) on Sunday, July 11, at USD field #1 in the complex.

Whitney Tolsma crafted an easy two-run, two-hit win as the team ran up a 13-point lead after three innings.

The offense for the Irish: Collette Joy � 3 for 3, one run, one rbi; Erin Corner � 1 for 2, two runs; Kelsie Austin � one run; Tolsma � 1 for 3, two runs, one rbi; Sandy Bouck � 1 for 2, two runs, two RBIs; Heather Walker � 2 for 2, two runs, two RBIs; Alisha O'Connor � 3 for 3, two runs, one rbi; Brooke Nelson � 1 for 2, one run; and Paige Prosser � 1 for 1, two runs, four RBIs.

Line score: Irish � 15 R, 13 H, 0 E, 4 lob; Heat � 2 R, 2 H, 1 E, 8 lob.

The win put Irish in the championship game where they faced the survivor from the loser's bracket � Canton's JFI Heat.

This time it was a different story as Canton built a 6-5 lead after four innings. Vermillion plated four runs in the top of the fifth.

Then, as the bottom half started, some of the participants were overcome by the stifling sun-produced heat, and the umpires called a halt to the proceedings. No decision was given for the final result, but here are the mid-fifth inning totals: Irish � 9 R, 9 H, 3 E, 6 lob; Heat � 7 R, 6 H, 2 E, 7 lob.

Vermillion stats: Tolsma � 3 for 3, two runs; Bouch � 1 for 1 (a homer), three runs, two RBIs; Walker � 1 for 2, one run, two RBIs; O'Connor � 1 for 3, one run; Nelson � 1 for 3, one run; Austin � 2 for 3, one rbi. Prosser � one run.
