Making the state and county fairs successful 4-H members, their parents, 4-H leaders, and judges all have key roles in making county fairs and the South Dakota State Fair successful.
L.J. Osborne, a youth development/4-H specialist for South Dakota State University Cooperative Extension, said older 4-H members act as mentors for younger 4-H members, helping them through events.
Parents provide important reinforcement to young people to make the fair a good learning experience.
4-H leaders serve an important function in helping to see that events run smoothly. "Their role is to make sure the fair happens in a way that is kid-friendly," Osborne said. Judges of 4-H exhibits are also crucial, Osborne said.
"They perform a very necessary service in providing that nonbiased evaluation of the child's product," Osborne said. "We couldn't do it without them."
Osborne added that the South Dakota State Fair still is in need of volunteers to help judge static 4-H exhibits. Contact your local Extension office to learn how you can volunteer. Or call the state 4-H office at (605) 688-4167 and ask for Diane Hexem.
