Nook 'n Cranny nominated for retailer award Gifts & Decorative Accessories magazine has nominated Nook 'n Cranny in the category of promotion for the Retailer Excellence Award 2004.
The winner will be announced at the publication's annual dinner to be held Aug. 15 at New York's Plaza Hotel.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of her Nook 'n Cranny gift store in Vermillion, owner Gloria Christopherson wanted to stage a memorable event. She envisioned an occasion that could become a regular tradition in the city, bringing new shoppers from out of town to benefit the entire local business community.
Thus was born the "Celebration of Women" festival, an elegant brunch featuring author and artist Jody Houghton, vendor booths showing local wares, trunk shows and many other local enterprises.
The involvement of Houghton, whose greeting cards, gifts, and book, Girlfriend Wisdom, were inspired by the popular poem, "When I am an Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple," helped Christopherson tap into the Red Hat Society, an organization of older women with 10,000 chapters, that also cite the poem as their inspiration.
Houghton helped Christopherson create a postcard invitation to the $30 event, which was sent to every Red Hat chapter within a six-hour drive of Vermillion, as well as to the store's mailing list of 2,700 customers. Over the weekend, Nook 'n Cranny enjoyed banner sales (up 62 percent) and its vendor booths at the event site did brisk business as well.
While the celebration was not intended specially for Red Hat Society members, the Red Hatters made up about 85 percent of the attendees and new chapters were formed by attendees who saw how much fun members were having.
Since that time Nook 'n Cranny has held a "Celebration of Women High Tea" and in October will sponsor a two-day "Celebration of Women" featuring Mary Jean Mollard of The Mary Jean Collection and Sue Christensen, motivational entrepreneur and author of Making a Six Figure Income on Your Terms.
For that event, they've already booked a large separate space to create a veritable village of vendors, while still allowing attendees time to visit Vermillion's downtown retail district.
