Obituaries Ella Mikkelson
Ella Mikkelson, 95, of Lodi, CA, passed away in a San Andreas Hospital on Wednesday, July 28, 2004.
She was born Oct. 13, 1908 in Leeuwarden, Holland, to Jacob and Jessie Ter Hedge. She came to the U.S. with her parents at the age of 3 through Ellis Island and lived in Iowa for a short time before moving to Wakonda in 1934.
In 1959 she and her husband Walter moved to California where they lived in Redwood City and Fremont before moving to Lodi in 1977.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and was active at Arbor Retirement Center.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Mikkelson and his wife Rose of Naknek, AK, and Jack Mikkelson and his wife Kathy of Rail Road Flat, CA; one daughter, Gladys Johnston and her husband Larry of Ft. Collins, CO; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 31 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lodi. Burial will be private at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi. Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Sidney Newlon, 92, of Tabor, IA, died Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Newlon was born July 29, 1911 in Columbus, NE, to Erasmus S. Newlon and Ellen P. (Osborn) Newlon. He was a 1929 graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, IA, and in 1936 he was married to Dorothy H. Shenton. He attended the Creighton University School of Journalism and had his first professional newspaper position at the Non-Pariel newspaper in Council Bluffs.
In 1951, he became the editor, publisher, and owner of the Tabor Beacon newspaper and later purchased the Randolph Enterprise newspaper, combining the two. Mr. Newlon was a member of the Tabor United Methodist Church where he served on many boards and councils over the years, Tabor Historical Society, Tabor Community Club and a past president, was honored as Grand Marshal of the Farmers Merchant Picnic, and was a former of the Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Dorothy Newlon. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Welden and husband James of Sioux City, IA; son, David Newlon of Tabor, IA; two grandchildren, Marcy Rigney and husband Andrew of Sioux City, and Patrick Newlon of Percival, IA; great-granddaughter, Emily Rigney; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 3 at the Tabor United Methodist Church with Pastor Jack Hofmockel officiating. Interment was in the Tabor Cemetery with military rites by the Rommel-Conklin VFW Post #7064 of Tabor. The Crawford-Marshall Funeral Chapel in Tabor was in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.
Inez Peterson, 87, Gayville, died Aug. 3, 2004 at Wakonda Heritage Manor.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7 at Gayville Lutheran Church, with burial in Danish Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, followed by a prayer service at 7 p.m.
