Vermillion retail store receives national honor Nook 'n Cranny, a downtown Vermillion retail business, has been awarded national recognition by Gifts & Decorative Accessories magazine. Owners Gloria and Dan Christopherson, at a gala awards ceremony, accepted the silver award in the promotion category on Aug. 15, at the Plaza Hotel grand ballroom in New York City.
Gifts & Decorative Accessories, a member of the Reed Business Information family of trade publications, is the leading monthly magazine covering the $50 billion gift and home decor industries.
Now in its 88th year of continuous publication, Gifts & Decorative Accessories is the major source of new product introductions, industry news and trends, and business solutions for manufacturers, wholesalers, and specialty retailers of gifts and decorative accessories.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Nook 'n Cranny, owner Gloria Christopherson wanted to stage a memorable event. She envisioned an occasion that could become a regular tradition in the city, bringing new shoppers from out of town to benefit the entire local business community.
Thus was born the "Celebration of Women" festival, an elegant brunch featuring author and artist Jody Houghton, vendor booths showing local wares, trunk shows and many other local enterprises.
The involvement of Houghton, whose greeting cards, gifts, and book, Girlfriend Wisdom, were inspired by the popular poem, When I am an Old Women, I Shall Wear Purple, helped Christopherson tap into the Red Hat Society, an organization of fun loving women with over 10,000 chapters, that also cite the poem as their inspiration.
Since that time Nook 'n Cranny has held a "Celebration of Women High Tea" last April and in October will sponsor a two-day (Friday evening and Saturday noon) "Celebration of Women" featuring Mary Jean Mollard of The Mary Jean Millinary Collection and Sue Christensen, motivational entrepreneur and author of Making a Six Figure Income on Your Terms.
Christensen will also debut her newest novel, Lies 'd Jour at the October event.
