Volante wins national collegiate press award The University of South Dakota's student-run newspaper The Volante was recently awarded the Associated Collegiate Press Best of Show general excellence award at the Associated Collegiate Press 21st Annual National College Newspaper and Yearbook workshops in Washington, D.C. July 29-Aug. 1.
The paper was entered in the four-year weekly category and won first place. The Volante claimed top honors just ahead of newspapers from the University of Nevada at Reno, Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., St. John's University/College of St. Benedict in Collegeville, MN, and George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. Best of Show entries consist of one copy of a newspaper from the current school year.
"It's exciting to be able to go to a national conference and bring an award home. The staff works hard during the year to produce a quality paper and to be recognized for our efforts is rewarding. It also serves as a great motivator to hit the ground running in September," said Dana Gross-Rhode, editor in chief of The Volante.
Convention Best of Show awards are onsite competitions open only to those publications attending each convention.
"The newspapers The Volante was competing against were high quality both in design and content. It was an honor to be named the top newspaper in our category being up against newspapers of that caliber," said Barbara Raus, the paper's managing editor.
The Volante is a weekly paper with a circulation of approximately 6,000.
