Historic Spirit Mound 10K scheduled Sept. 11 Runners and walkers will have an opportunity to follow the footsteps of Lewis and Clark to historic Spirit Mound on Sept. 11. The 10K USATF certified course will follow Highway 19, beginning at Highway 50 in Vermillion to Spirit Mound Historic Prairie Park. Start time is 8 a.m.
Spirit Mound is one of the few physical features on the Lewis and Clark Trail still identifiable as a place the explorers visited and recorded in their journals. After the race, runners will have the opportunity to participate in a Native American smudging ceremony.
"Although this is a certified course for serious runners, we encourage everyone to walk or run and enjoy this unique experience," said Judy Clark, chair of the race committee whose members are Colette Abbott, Barbara Yelverton and Keley Smith-Keller
The Spirit Mound 10K Race/Walk will benefit the W. H. Over Museum located in Vermillion. The museum, founded in 1883, preserves and interprets natural and cultural
history of South Dakota. It has the largest collection of natural and cultural artifacts in the state.
"We're very grateful to our sponsors Clay County Abstract & Title Co., USD President James and Colette Abbott, Vermillion Medical Clinic, Dr. Charles Yelverton, Hy-Vee Food Store and Jones' Food Center for making this fund raiser possible," Clark said.
All participants will receive Spirit Mound T-shirts. Awards will be given to first place male and female overall winners, as well as the first three place winners in each age category. Registration fee is $25.
