JV volleyball players face Minnesota teams at Luverne by Jim Prosser The VHS Lady Tanager junior varsity volleyball team traveled to Luverne, MN, for the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 11. The girls played well against some tough competition.
In the opening round the competition was Jackson County who won 25-16, 25-18, and they went on to win the tourney. For Vermillion, Alicia Brown and Krista Froke each had 2 kills; Nicole Orr served 4 aces. Brown led the team in digs (4).
Next, the girls played RTR (Russell, Tyler, Ruthton), winning the first game 25-1; losing the second 24-26. Kinsey Weydert led the team in serving with 3 aces; Becky Hanson added 2; Paige Prosser and Brittni Stewart had 2 kills each offensively, while Weydert, Brown, and Froke each recorded 3 blocks; Brown led the team with 5 digs and Annie Roche played a great defensive game as the libero (seventh roving back line player).
In the third match the Tanagers split again (21-25, 25- 23). Roche led the team in digs with 10; Prosser and Froke each recorded 3 kills, and Prosser had 3 blocks; Froke served 2 aces and Weydert had 9 set assists.
The final match was a two-game loss to Luverne (23-25, 21-25). Offensively, Froke had 8 for 8 service points with 2 aces. The Tanagers had 22 kills during the match, led by Froke with 8. Defensively, Roche had 11 digs and Stewart had 3 blocks. Roche and Brown led the passing with 6 each and Weydert registered 13 set assists.
The team's 2-6 record prevented them from further competition in the tourney.
