Lightning-shortened game results in Tanager JV loss by Jim Prosser The Tanager JV football team was outscored by Canton's JV 38-18 an unusual offense vs. defense "shootout" where each team scored in various ways.
The C-Hawks had two passing and three rushing touchdowns while the Tanagers scored on a pass play, one running play, and a fumble recovery for their three TDs.
The fumble was forced by Kyle Brunick on Canton's first play. Canka Wilch scooped it up and went 33 yards for the TD. In the second quarter, Sam Laprath plunged in from three yards out, following a six-play drive of 65 yards. Their final touchdown came when Reid Meiercort wrestled a Brunick pass away from the Canton defender and raced 11 yards for the score.
The outcome of the game never seemed to be in doubt as Vermillion fell behind by 14 before they could mount any offense and by halftime the score stood at C-Hawks, 24, Tanagers 12. The third quarter Tanager score was countered with 14 points by Canton. Then, in the fourth, lightning started flashing and play was terminated.
Laprath toted most of the running load with 11 carries for 39 yards, and Adam Brunick was three for four in passing for 50 total yards. Andrew Pier gained 62 yards on eight carries. Kyle Hubert had the longest run 30 yards.
On defense, there were some sterling efforts by Wilch (10 tackles, fumble recovery); Brunick (seven Ts, FF); Ryan Scheidel and Gabe Verbeski (six Ts each). Meiercort, Jerrod Freidel and Bobby Dykstra each recorded five Ts.
