Tanager freshmen FB have tough win Sept. 9 by Jim Prosser On Thursday, Sept. 9, the Vermilliion freshman football team opened its season in Hartford in a knock-down, drag-out, typical encounter with the West Central ninth-graders.
A ferocious defensive struggle went on for 3 1/2 quarters before a Reid Meierkort to Cody Miller pass, covering 35 yards, finally broke the stalemate with 4:24 left in the game.
The Tanager tough defense continued to keep the home team out of the end zone and the final score was 6-0 for Vermillion.
Rushing statistics: Luke Heine 30 yards, 12 carries; Jerrod Freidel 52 yards, 15 carries; Meierkort 23 yards, 5 carries.
Defense: Heine 12 Ts; Thomas Mollet 6 Ts; Jackson Freidel 4 Ts; Jarrod Freidel 8 Ts, 1 pass intercept, 1 fumble recovery.
"We really battled with them," said coach Jason Huska. "It was a traditional Vermillion vs. West Central conflict. Our defense came to play! Coach Iverson and I are very pleased with the effort. Great win for these kids."
