Tanager soccer wins 2 The Lady Tanagers soccer team completed a grueling two-day road trip last weekend with wins over Sturgis and Lead-Deadwood. The victories push the season mark for the Tanagers to two wins and one tie.
Playing in Sturgis on Aug. 27, the Tanagers conceded an early goal which set the tone for a very poor first half and a 3-1 half-time deficit. The team regrouped at halftime, and scored three goals while holding Sturgis out of the net during the second half en-route to a 4-3 victory.
Goal scorers for the Tanagers were Emma Erickson with two, and Emily Gamm and Margaret Mueller with one apiece.
A less than fresh Tanager team took the field the next morning against Lead-Deadwood, a team which was undefeated in regular play last season. The Tanagers again gave up an early goal, but tightened up defensively and kept steady pressure on the Lead-Deadwood goal throughout the first half, taking a 3-2 lead into halftime.
The second half witnessed a scoring barrage, with Lead-Deadwood leading the match 6-4 with less then 10 minutes remaining. The Tanagers put on an amazing rally that started with a 25-yard blast by Morgon Brooks, followed by a relentless two-person attack by strikers Emma Erickson and Cori Bonte that resulted with the winning goal being scored by the Tanagers in the final minute for a 7-6 win.
"We did not play good soccer at times this weekend," said coach Jeff Pederson. "However, when the chips were down, this team showed tremendous character and the ability to turn a game around. I do not know if I have ever witnessed the level of determination that Erickson and Bonte demonstrated in the final minutes of the Lead-Deadwood game. That was something special."
The Tanagers host their first home match Saturday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. at Cotton Park.
