Tanager volleyball team wins two in Todd County/Lennox triangular meet by Jim Prosser The Vermillion volleyball team played its first triangular of the season Aug. 31, when they met the Todd County Falcons, and Lennox Orioles at Lennox.
Scoring procedures were: Matches � 3 best of 5 games with "rally" scoring ( every point counts, no matter the server) and the play ends when the leading team scores 25 or leads by 2 points after that.
In the Lennox match, the Tanagers won 3-0, (25-15, 25-19, 25-21) and salvaged a 3 to 1 game victory over Todd County (22-25, 25-17, 25-11, and 25-13)
Third year head coach Lenni Billberg's varsity has five seniors, six juniors and four sophomore players on the 2004 roster.
"This was a great opening for us. We did so many things right for a first night showing. I was impressed � the girls have really made a transition for improvement in their individual games," Billberg said. "Annie Carlson and Ellen Odson have taken the team on their shoulders and are leading us towards a great season."
In the match against the Orioles, the Tanagers were led by Carlson with 23 attacks, 6 passes, 7 kills, 16 assists, 6 digs, and 15 points on serve. She was aided by Brittany Weydert with 22 passes, 2.20 passing efficiency, 9 attacks, and 8 digs. Also making major contributions were Michelle Olson, 14 passes with 2.33 passing efficiency, and had 18 attacks and 8 digs; Ellen Odson had 24 set assists, 17 sv pts, 4 aces.
Against the Falcons, the Tanagers again were led by Carlson with passes 16, attacks 33, kills 13 digs 2, and aces 3; Odson led with set assists 29, 22 sv pts, 4 aces, and 6 digs. Heather Walker had 10 passes, 9 attacks, 3 kills, and 17 sv pts, with 4 aces.
Melissa and Michelle Olson each had 3 blocks (also, Melissa had 11 attacks, 2 kills, 14 sv pts; Michelle had 23 attacks, 2 kills,and 14 sv pts.)
