Tanagers soccer still unbeaten The Vermillion Tanagers soccer team improved its record to three wins and one tie with a 5-2 victory over the Sioux Falls Christian Chargers on Sept. 4.
The highlight of the match was a goal headed into the net by striker Emma Erickson from a perfect cross by midfielder Sandi Winckler. Other goal scorers for the day were Kelsey Bowman, Amy Mart, Cori Bonte and Erickson with a second.
Defensively, the Tanagers were led by Jessica Hirsch, Nicola Obeney, Mara Johnson, Jade Hofer and Morgan Brooks. Sarah Christopherson and Jamie Bernard shared goalkeeper duties, with each playing a half between the posts.
SF Christian scored on a second-half penalty kick when Bernard was ruled to have brought down a Christian attacker after coming out of the net to win a ball. A second Christian goal was conceded late in the match.
While the team continues to demonstrate scoring prowess, team defense remains a point of concern as the team is allowing an average of 3.25 scores per game.
"We need to tighten up defensively by becoming more aggressive to the ball," said coach Jeff Pederson.
