USD soccer team beats Concordia-St. Paul 3-0 The South Dakota soccer team (1-1), led by two goals from Tina Brummer, evened its record and defeated Concordia St. Paul, 3-0, in nonconference action at St. Paul, MN, on Sunday, Aug. 29.
The Coyotes dominated play by outshooting Concordia St. Paul, 26-5.
USD opened scoring with Brummer's first goal (unassisted) at the 30:45 mark. Brummer, a sophomore from Gretna, NE, also scored an unassisted goal at 44:03 to give USD a 2-0 lead. With the two goals, Brummer now has three goals this season to lead USD.
Late in the second half, USD's Jessica Schnell, a junior from Lincoln, NE, closed out the scoring at the 85:24 mark. Schell's goal resulted from a deflection in front of the net.
For the game, USD had 12 shots on goal and held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. USD goalkeeper Keyton Wheelock (Traverse City, MI) recorded her first career shutout, recording three saves in 90 minutes of action.
Winona State 3, USD 1
Winona State (1-0) scored two second half goals and defeated South Dakota (0-1) in the season-opening match for both teams at Winona, MN, on Aug. 27.
Winona State, which outshot USD, 18-9, opened scoring on an unassisted goal by Heidi Woerle at the 23:28 mark.
USD tied the score at 39:21 when Tina Brummer, a sophomore from Gretna, NE, scored off an assist from Jessica Schnell (Lincoln, NE).
Winona State scored the final two goals late in the match. First, Kallie Tellefsen scored an unassisted goal at the 85:41 mark. Then, WSU's Kayla Walters scored an unassisted goal at the 89:26 mark.
USD held a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. Brummer led USD with three shots on goal. Overall, USD had seven shots on goal and nine total shots.
Freshman Coyote goalkeeper Keyton Wheelock (Traverse City, MI) had two saves in 90 minutes of work. Meanwhile WSU goalie Kristin Nelson allowed just one goal and had six saves.
